The course on unity addresses the age-old question of why there is so much division in the church when we are supposed to be one. It explains that the church hasn't fully grasped the power and joy of unity because it hasn't truly experienced it. The course also delves into why the church seems to have abandoned the pursuit of unity, and explores the various factors that hinder unity within the church.
Learn all about this class, its scope, purpose, and exciting approach!
We investigate the first reason the church has not been able to live in unity. Is unity a truth to believe and defend or discard?
The church’s divisiveness reveals a foundational problem—the unwillingness or inability to change. What is spiritual inertia? How has it affected the church generally, or you more particularly?
Why are church leaders—those who should reflect Christ’s unity—the very ones perpetuating division? In this eye-opening 4th session of Unity: The Forgotten Treasure, Paul J. Bucknell challenges modern church leadership structures and their tendency to displace Jesus as the true Head of the Church. Drawing from 1 Samuel 8 and 1 Corinthians 3, this video dives deep into the heart of our leadership crisis. Are we following men, systems, or Christ?
Have we lost sight of one of the most essential treasures in our faith—Christian unity? In this video, Paul J. Bucknell invites the body of Christ to take a fresh look at how our theological conclusions, denominational divisions, and doctrinal pride may blind us to the power of unity in the Spirit. We’ll examine the crucial difference between “upper-level” theological debates and “lower-level” biblical exploration rooted in humility and God’s Word. Discover how centuries of spiritual haze have kept believers from experiencing deeper fellowship and truth.
Could your mindset be hindering Christian unity? In this eye-opening session, Paul J. Bucknell explores how mind filters—ingrained theological assumptions and cultural worldviews—shape the way we interpret Scripture and interact with fellow believers. Drawing from Matthew 22, we examine how Jesus skillfully revealed the biases of the Sadducees and Pharisees—not to shame them, but to correct their faulty theological filters. Mind filters may sound harmless, but when left unchecked, they divide churches, harden hearts, and distort the power of core doctrines. Discover how Upper-Level theological conclusions often disable learning, while Lower-Level engagement with Scripture opens the door to truth and fellowship. This video will challenge you to relinquish rigid assumptions and rediscover the transforming power of God’s Word, guided by a teachable spirit.
Develop a learning heart, the first of seven approaches to develop a spirit of unity. A learning heart is the first of seven spiritual approaches to undergird a spirit of #unity . I analyze what kind of learning and teaching brings maximum spiritual benefit, following
Learn from Jesus’ way of confronting those who theologically opposed Him. Jesus resolves theological differences through biblical exploration. We examine His method of confronting those with different viewpoints on the resurrection. Jesus employed an approach that we refer to as the Redemptive Filter.
We should major on the major doctrines, but what distinguishes the major from the minor teachings? By differentiating between essential Gospel teachings and other doctrines, we can focus on our common confession of Christ and minimize our differences. We provide the concept here but will build on this in the following sessions.
Jesus unites us, not doctrine. By keeping our central gaze upon Christ and His saving work, we can wholeheartedly unite with God's people by following Him. To minimize conflicts and disunity, we must anchor our hopes and values on Christ.
By better differentiating the Bible’s stated truths from our valued meditations and speculations, we can more readily minimize our opinions and prioritize our delight in God’s chief truths. We must love God’s Word above our personal opinions and theories to avoid promoting and favoring our ideas. Why does doctrine divide? Shouldn’t we Christians be united? Learn some key reasons Christians divide over doctrines. This gives a foundational understanding of how unity can be reached in later sessions.
By better discriminating between God’s Word and our valued meditations, we can more readily prioritize our delight in God’s chief truths, minimize our opinions, and maximize our love for the brethren. This point expands on the prior lesson, providing a good foundation for examining theological conclusions in the third section.
We value unity, which allows us to approach scriptures with others peacefully, lovingly, and joyfully. Learn practical ways to maintain unity while discussing truths, doctrines, applications, and biblical passages. Gain insights from marital unity!
Unity arises from collectively centering on and admiring Jesus Christ and the Gospel, while giving prominence to other teachings leads to discord.
Do we espouse sound doctrine, or does today’s sound doctrine describe something different from what Paul espoused? What is sound doctrine?
Doctrines like Christ’s nature are complex and poorly understood. Our attempts to make logical sense of Christ’s nature shroud His splendor. We study the factors that shaped the Nicene Creed, including the Arian Controversy and its unhealthy influences on the church’s unity.
The doctrine of the Trinity has provoked much disunity in the body of Christ. Why does doctrine separate? This is the second treatment of a central doctrine to show how, through a biblical approach, we can retain sound doctrine and maintain unity of the faith. Jesus commanded unity we persist in obtaining it.
Our goal is unity, not toleration. We explore the means to accomplish this and point out why we have yet to achieve unity. We use the Virgin Birth as an example to achieve unity despite different doctrines, interpretations, and approaches.
While presenting three elements for approaching doctrinal differences with unity in view, we expand on the third: agreement. We first show how this is done with Genesis 2:15-17 and the Covenant of Works.
These case studies provide three illustrations from challenging biblical texts and doctrinal issues to show how to apply the agreement process: The Millennium (Rev 20), Sons of God (Gen 6), and Holy Communion (Matt 26:26-29).
What is the purpose of systematic theology and doctrine? How have they hurt us? How can they aid us in knowing and declaring the truth? How can we pursue unity with so many doctrines about us?
How have our differences negatively impacted Christian training? We explore how unity's truth would refine and refocus our goals for Christian leadership training. What are our training goals? Unfortunately, much training reinforces disunity and strengthens doctrinal and ecclesiastical walls. Unity’s truth critically refines and refocuses our goals for Christian leadership training.
Our brave steps toward unity lead us closer to experiencing God’s presence and fulfilling His will. But where does this unity lead, and what does it look like? Paul suggests three sequential waves of influence that will lead the church forward.
This course on Unity: The Forgotten Treasure closes by identifying needed changes in our approach to doctrines and people to carry out unity practically. Unity enables us to enjoy life with others immeasurably. This 25th session of Unity: The Forgotten Treasure, An Examination of Our Theological Conclusions brings a closer to this series.
